Mississippi

The 2011 Mississippi election season kicks off tomorrow with the primary elections. The fields are set, and voters have from 7am to 7pm local time to cast their ballots. If a candidate fails to receive a simple majority in the partisan primary, a primary runoff election will be held August 23. The general election will be held November 8. The last day to register to vote is October 9.

Among the seats up for grabs are governor and lieutenant governor. Both seats are open elections: current Governor Haley Barbour is prevented, by term limits, from seeking a third consecutive term in office and current lieutenant governor Phil Bryant is running for governor.

Governor

Three third-party candidates for governor, Bobby Kearan, Shawn O'Hara and William D. Oatis, have already qualified for the general election and secured a spot on the ballot in November.

In the Republican primary, Bryant has a strong lead in the polls, and as the current lieutenant governor he is well-poised to win his party's nomination. The Democratic primary proves to be a much closer race, though the latest polls indicate that regardless who represents the Democratic Party, the seat will likely go to a Republican in the general election.
