Schaeffer told the Daily Inter Lake that making the most out of tax revenues was a reason why he ran, suggesting that money be used on promoting tourism, job training in the medical field, and keeping up infrastructure; without such action, he said that tax money should be returned. He also expressed opposition to the state legislature's lack of response to the Affordable Healthcare act.
Schaeffer ran in the 2012 election for Montana House of Representatives, District 10. Schaeffer ran unopposed in the June 5 primary election and was defeated by incumbent Mark Blasdel (R) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.
