Alief Independent School District is located in Harris County, TX
Alief ISD is located in Houston, Texas, which is also a seat of Harris County, Texas. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Houston is home to 2,099,451 residents.[1] Alief encompasses 36.6 square miles near the southeastern Texas border.

Demographics

In terms of graduation rate, average household income and poverty rate, Houston underperformed in these areas. The graduation rate was 74.4% compared to 80.4% statewide. The average household income was $44,124 compared to $50,920 in the entire state. Houston had a poverty rate of 21.5%, while the poverty rate for Texas was 17.0%.[1]

Superintendent

The current superintendent of Alief Independent School District is HD Chambers, who was appointed in April 2011. Chambers has a bachelor's degree in Education from Lamar University, a master's degree from Sam Houston State University, and his superintendent certification from Stephen F. Austin State University. Chambers has devoted 26 years to education, including time at Aldine Independent School District where he spent 6 years as a teacher and Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District where he served 14 years in numerous administration roles. His general philosophy on education is based upon a belief that a "highly educated citizenry is the only way for a society to sustain itself and improve from generation to generation."[2]

Superintendent salary

According to records received through the Texas Public Information Act, Alief ISD has one of the top ten highest paid school superintendents in the state. Louis Stoerner received $297,846 in base pay for the 2007/08 year.[3]

The Alief Independent School District is overseen by a seven-member board elected at-large to four-year terms by plurality vote.[4]

Four seats are up for election on the Alief Independent School District board on November 5, 2013. Two incumbents, Nghi T. Ho and Sarah B. Winkler were elected to the board, as well as two newcomers, Michael Bennett and Tiffany Thomas. Three seats will be up for election in November 2015.
