The American Petroleum Institute (API) is a national trade association that represents the oil and natural gas industry. The association was formed on March 20, 1919. API's offices were originally established in New York City, and in 1969 the association moved its headquarters to Washington, D.C. API operates offices in 21 state capitals.[1][2]

The mission statement of the association is:

API's mission is to influence public policy in support of a strong, viable U.S. oil and natural gas industry essential to meet the energy needs of consumers in an efficient, environmentally responsible manner.
