Americans Elect is a nonpartisan non-profit political organization with the goal of "creating the first nonpartisan, national online presidential primary."[1] Their mission is to give the American people more power in the selection of presidential candidates and to provide more competition to the two major parties.

History

Americans Elect was created on April 6, 2010, by Peter Ackerman. In July of 2011, it began recruiting possible delegates for the 2012 Presidential primary. In February 2012, it began accepting draft candidates.[2]

The major goal of providing a third-party presidential candidate was unsuccessful in 2012. In May 15, 2012, Americans Elect announced that "no candidate has reached the national support threshold required" to compete in the online convention. As a result, Americans Elect produced no candidate for the 2012 presidential election.[3]

However, Americans Elect candidates still ran for U.S. Congress in 2012.
