Austrian Referendum on Turkish EU Membership, 2011
An Austrian Referendum on Turkish EU Membership will likely be voted on in the country of Austria.
The Austrian government stated that it will hold a referendum on if Turkey should join the European Union regardless of the results of talks between Turkey and the EU government in Brussels. Austria has been one of the loudest advocates against the country joining the EU and noted that it felt Turkish immigrants in the country have not integrated well to European life and standards. It was also noted that Turkey has a long way to go before European fundamentals such as freedom of opinion, democratic participation and human rights are implemented in the country.
