2010 ballot measure petition signature costs
  • Goal: This article aims to compare-and-contrast signature-collection costs based on the Cost Per Required Signature (CPRS) for statewide ballot measures in 2010.
  • The project guidelines can be found here.
  • Complete this project for the following states:
    • Florida
    • Missouri
    • North Dakota
  • Visit each state campaign finance database.
  • Add the signature company name and total spent on signatures.
  • To identify the CPRS, divide the total spent by the number of required signatures.
  • (Example:California)

Voter guides
  • Goal: Similar to Election results, the Voter guides page should provide a list links to the various online voter guides per state.
  • Visit each state election website and add the links to the voter guides on the page (in it's appropriate state section).
  • Once all sections are completed. Go to each State WikiProject page, subsection "Voter guides" (i.e. Alabama voter guide section) and add the DPL code in the section (DPL code is below, replace with appropriate state name).

2010 voter guide analysis:

Features of official voter guides, compared by state
  • Goal: to provide an overview of what type of information was made available in voter guides in 2010.
  • Identify each state voter guide for 2010. Add link to chart if not already listed.
  • If a feature (fiscal note, arguments, etc.) is not available in the voter guide then mark the chart with {{d}}.
  • If features are available mark with {{ap}}.
  • If portions of the feature are made a available (for example: only a summary of arguments), make a note within the chart.
  • Expand the chart to include a column for where the voter guide was located (Secretary of State website, Attorney General website, separate election website) and provide a link.
  • Expand the chart to include a column for the form in which the voter guide is made available (pdf, html, downloadable, etc.)

In the state legislative project, one of our primary focuses is maintaining profiles of the 7,384 current state legislators. As you work on the three components below, keep track of the number of pages where you add content. This will be necessary for inputting into tracking spreadsheets at a later date. For now, the one spreadsheet that will help you is this one: 2011 State Legislatures Component Tracking. You can access this via your google docs or by clicking the link. You will see your states listed and then in Column D of the Senate and House tabs, the count for how many legislators require the following components to be added.

Pay particular attention to the new photo copyright language that we use. Not all photos will be properly attributed. Here are some models to follow:

In order to know which legislators do not have photos, there is a simple formula you need to follow. This is an opportunity to learn briefly about DPL, which is a powerful DPL tool we use on the wiki. On this page User:Gpallay/photos of legislators, you will see a list of legislators. If you click "Edit" you can see some complex formulas. But the only line you need to worry about is this one:
|category = Current member, Alabama State Senate
All you need to do is change the state to whatever state you are trying to work with, and then by clicking the "show preview" button at the bottom, you will see a list of state legislators in that chamber.
The first column will display their name, and the second column will be the name of their picture. If there is a blank in the column, then you know that they need a photo. You will be done with the state when all of the legislators have a photo.
An important note: naming conventions for the photos should be "John Smith.jpg" or "John Doe.jpg" You might see some photos on the wiki that are not named this way -- do not follow those formatting.
Using the above instructions, add photos to the newly-elected legislators who need photos from New York (Senate only), North Carolina, North Dakota, New Mexico (House only).

Using the above instructions, add donor boxes from the 2010 election for legislators who won election. The states you should do this for are: New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota

  • Biographies on Profiles
Writing:Introductory section of a state legislative profile
On some of the pages of new legislators elected in November 2010, there is very little biographical information about the legislator. For example, you can see on this page Margaret Sitte, that her introduction has only two sentences with no other information. Things like, education, prior political experience, and professional experience are examples of information that would go in a biography in the first section of a legislator's page. A more filled out example would be Sheldon Silver or Shannon Jones. Most of the time, the legislator's official website contains sufficient biographical information. You can find a link to their site in their infobox. Another good resource would be their Project Vote Smart bio -- a link can usually be found in the "External links" section of the legislator's page.
Like with above, you will be working on biographies for new legislators in New Mexico, New York, New York, North Carolina, and North Dakota.

Editing work

You'll be working through a number of the underdeveloped articles here. The immediate goal is to make sure that all of these articles, at a minimum, include a list of the articles in BP's database that correspond to each particular political topic.

Term limits on the ballot is an example of an article that lists the relevant articles, by year and also includes some background on this type of ballot measure. We will eventually want that type of background in all the lists-of-ballot-measures-by-political-topic articles but for right now, we want to make sure that the articles at least display what was on the ballot, as in Alcohol on the ballot.

To make sure that these articles are capturing what's in the BP database, you'll be using a feature called Dynamic Page List or DPL. You can read an explanation of what DPL does here. This allows you to call up whatever articles do exist in the database into your target article simply by adding some bits of simple code.

Depending on which political topic you're working on, go to one of these category pages:

It is by looking at which years are represented in the category articles that you'll know which years need to be represented/dealt with on the equivalent article such as Hunting on the ballot. For example, you can see by comparing Category:Hunting to Hunting on the ballot that the hunting on the ballot article is missing sections for 1932, 1936, 1946, etc. Category:Hunting is your key to what ultimately needs to show up on hunting on the ballot and you'll want to keep a tab open to Category:Hunting as you work on the main article.

Headertabs:

You'll be organizing the sections on articles like hunting on the ballot using header tabs, so one of the first things you'll want to do is read up on how header tabs work.

Organize by state, date, local and "not on":

As in the example of alcohol on the ballot, you'll want 4 header tabs.

  • The first header tab will be labeled "By state". In this section, you'll call up all the relevant articles (using DPL) under subsections labeled by the name of the relevant state. You'll know what state section headings you need by looking at Category:Hunting.
