Nelson was a 2012 Republican candidate for District 25 of the Wisconsin State Assembly.

Elections for the office of Wisconsin State Senate will consist of a primary election on August 12, 2014, and a general election on November 4, 2014. The signature-filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 2, 2014. Martha Laning is unopposed in the Democratic primary. Devin Lemahieu will face Barry Nelson in the Republican primary.[1]

Nelson ran in the 2012 election for Wisconsin State Assembly District 25. He was defeated by Paul Tittl in the Republican primary on August 14, 2012. Jim Brey defeated Luke Bushman, Ron Gruett, and Bernie Starzewski in the Democratic primary. Independent incumbent Robert Ziegelbauer did not run for re-election. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[2]
