Brian Dawson recall, Discovery Bay Community Services District Board, California (2012)
Reasons for recall
The petition language charges Dawson with poor judgment, inability to control his anger, and an increasing potential for violence. Dawson has been charged with spousal battery and child endangerment. He has also been involved in a number of angry confrontations after board meetings. Dawson has stepped down from his roles as board vice president and liaison to the school district.
Path to the ballot
25% of the town's voters needed to sign the recall petition in order to force a recall election. This means petition organizers needed to collect 1,649 signatures before February 6th, 2012. On February 6th, Dawson resigned, saying "Today is not a day of joy or release, but rather one of unremitting pain." Dawson said he resigned to save the city the estimated $56,000 that it would cost to hold a recall election. The Discovery Bay Board has the option of appointing Dawson's replacement or holding an election to fill his seat.
