The California Department of Education oversees public K-12 education in California. The department was created in 1921 and managed 10,296 schools and 6,220,993 K-12 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[3][4]

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is composed of 11 members, including a student representative who serves a one-year term. The other ten members of the board serve staggered four-year terms. All members of the board are appointed by the Governor of California. The state Superintendent of Public Instruction serves as the board's executive officer and secretary. The purpose of the board is to set policies and regulations for the state's public school system. The State Board of Education also holds the authority to waive certain provisions of the California Education Code upon request from local education agencies.[9]
