Candidate declares for South Carolina special election

COLUMBIA, South Carolina: Long-time State House member Harry Ott, Jr. (D) resigned on July 20, 2013 to work as the state director for the Farm Service Agency in the federal government.

A special election has been called for October 29, with a primary on September 10. The filing period for candidates ran from July 12 to July 26.[1]

Two candidates who have declared are Democratic candidate Russell L. Ott and Republican Charles H. Stoudemire Jr.. Russell Ott is the son of the former representative. Stoudemire previously ran unsuccessfully against Harry Ott in 2010.

The district leans heavily Democratic -- Ott did not face any opposition in 2012 or 2008 and he easily defeated Stoudemire by more than 30 points.
