Political career

Mississippi Superintendent of Education (2013 - present)

Wright has served as Mississippi Superintendent of Education since November 1, 2013.

Common Core

Wright is working on the transition of the Mississippi school standards to better align with the Common Core State Standards Initiative. The U.S. Department of Education approved a waiver for schools to retain the letter grade they received in the 2012-2013 school year if the grade from 2013-2014 had decreased. Wright said the decrease would be due to the current state tests not aligning with the common core curriculum the students are using. State tests aligning with the common core standards will be implemented in the spring of 2015.[3]

Wright was appointed as Mississippi Superintendent of Education by the state Board of Education on September 25, 2013. She was one of five finalists for the position.[4]
