Cave Creek Walmart referendum, 2009
Both these propositions passed in the Town of Cave Creek with both winning by about 76%.
"Protect Residential Integrity Zoning and Environment" (PRIZE), composed of Cave Creek residents, filed an application for a referendum in order to overturn a decision made by the Cave Creek Town Council to allow a General Plan amendment and land rezoning. The rezoning and amendment opened up permission for Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to apply for a site-plan review. The council voted unanimously in favor of the amendment.
WalMart wants to build the new store on 20 acres of property southeast of Carefree Highway and Cave Creek Road.
Cave Creek town officials estimate that the proposed special election will cost between $8,000 and $10,000.
"Friends of Cave Creek" supported a "yes" vote on Propositions 400 and 401. This group raised $185,000 for its campaign.
The group PRIZE, opponents of a Walmart store in Cave Creek, urge a "no" vote because they believe that a new Wal-Mart store would destroy the town's rural values.
