Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Stevens' campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • 2nd Amendment: I am a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment. A person’s right to defend themselves is absolute.
  • National Debt: There is no issue more important than living within our means. We cannot continue to kick the can down the road. By electing the same politicians who vote to increase our budget, we are stealing our children and grandchildren’s future. It is way too easy to spend other people’s money.
  • Jobs & Economy: It is not the responsibility of the government to create jobs. The government’s responsibility is to provide a free market economy so private enterprise can thrive. We have far too many regulations which are a burden to the entrepreneurial spirit of Americans.
  • Veterans: Alaska has more veterans per capita than any other state in the nation. Are our veterans getting the benefits they’ve earned? Veterans fulfilled their contract and we must honor that contract as promised. Period.
  • Fish & Wildlife: When it comes to fish and game management, the federal government does not share Alaskan’s values. Alaska is the only state that is prohibited from managing its own fish and game wildlife. Alaskans are more knowledgeable and better equipped to make the decisions needed to protect this valuable resource.

2014

Stevens' website highlighted the following campaign themes:[11]

Only Individuals Have Rights

  • Excerpt: "Ultimately, inalienable rights belong to the individual citizen, and no other entity. Not federal government, not state government, nor any business or corporate entity. Coercion by larger governmental entities is still coercion. Insomuch as individuals do not infringe on another’s life, liberty, or property governement at any level does not have the right to interfere."

STOP Runaway Spending

  • Excerpt: "I commit to working to change the downward spiral the state is on while there is still time, by voting against any future spending in excess of sustainable levels and for the immediate transfer of the remaining $11 billion in the state’s savings accounts into the Permanent Fund where it will be protected by the state constitution from further government raid."

Individual Liberties

  • Excerpt: "Alaskans needs a legislator who will review these questions and work to restrict our government’s spying activities against its own citizens."

Free Market Solutions

  • Excerpt: "History tells us that the greatest innovations of our civilization have come when citizens are free to create and challenge the status quo. Currently, state and federally protected monopolies restrict our ability to create. We need our government to promote creativity with less regulation."

Education

  • Excerpt: "I believe in accountability for education spending. Alaska’s education costs are the highest in the nation, yet we are last place in 4th grade reading scores and rank 39th overall compared to the other 50 states."
