Tkaczyk ran in the 2012 election for New York State Senate District 46. She defeated Monica M. Arias Miranda and Thomas E. Dolan in the Democratic primary on September 13, 2012; she also ran on the Working Families Party ticket. Tkaczyk defeated incumbent George Amedore (R) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[3][4][5]

The 46th District was newly drawn, and seemed initially to favor incumbent Amedore. However, the race was close, as outside PACs poured money into the district supporting Tkaczyk. Although the official results shown below deemed Amedore the winner, county election officials opened 91 new ballots in January 2013 which eventually gave Tkaczyk an 18 vote lead. Amedore, who had been officially sworn into the Senate just days before, became the shortest tenured Senator in modern history.[6]

Legislative scorecards are used to evaluate elected public officials based on voting record. Some scorecards are created by political advocacy groups with a focus on specific issues, while others are developed by newspapers and are broad in scope. Scorecards are meant to be used as a tool for voters to have a quick picture of whether their views align with a particular legislator's record.

Because scorecards can be specific to particular issues or general to a state’s legislative term, for example, each report should be considered on its own merits. Each entity that publishes these reports uses different methodologies and definitions for the terms used.

An overview for scorecards in all 50 states can be found on this page. To contribute to the list of New York scorecards, email suggestions to scorecards@ballotpedia.org.
