Chester County Commissioner named Pennsylvania SOS
WEST CHESTER, Pennsylvania: Republican Governor-elect Tom Corbett, who will be inaugurated as the state's forty-sixth chief executive next week, announced on Wednesday, January 12th, 2011 his selection of Chesty County Commissioner Carol Aichele as the new Secretary of the Commonwealth.
With her nomination, this marks the third individual in less than a year who will have held the statewide executive position. Pedro A. Cortés, who had first been nominated for the state governmental office by Governor Ed Rendell in April 2003, resigned suddenly on June 11, 2010 in order to become executive vice president of "Everyone Counts", a company that specializes in military and overseas voting technology. After first serving as Acting Secretary in Cortés's absence, Deputy Secretary Basil L. Merenda took up the mantle of Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that same month.
Aichele, who served two consecutive terms as a member of the three-member Board of Commissioners in Chester County beginning in November 2003, joins her husband, Steve, who was named as the Governor's general counsel, as a member of Corbett's cabinet.
