Retson grew up in Crown Point, Indiana and graduated from Crown Point High School. He then attended Valparaiso University earning a B.S. in electrical and computer engineering in Valparaiso University in 2001. He went on to earn his M.B.A from Purdue University with a focus on operational management, business strategy and economics in 2004.
Retson's professional experience includes working as a management consultant on business processes and as a manager at one of North America's largest plastics factories.
Retson has been politically active in Indiana. He served for several years as Secretary of the Crown Point Republican Party and has served as a Republican Precinct Committeeman since 2008. He also represented his district as a Delegate to the Republican State Convention.
