It is New Mexico's newest county, created on June 19, 1981, from the westernmost four-fifths of the formerly much larger Valencia County. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,542 square miles (11,763 km²), of which, 4,539 square miles (11,756 km²) of it is land and 2 square miles (6 km²) of it (0.06%) is water.
