Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington

Mission

CREW dedicates itself to promoting ethics and accountability in government and public life. The group targets government officials who use their position of power to help special interests instead of representing constituents evenly. CREW carries out this mission through research, litigation and media outreach.

CREW accomplishes its mission through litigation, Freedom of Information Act requests, ethics complaints, Internal Revenue Service complaints, Federal Election Commission complaints, and requests for investigations.

CREW's Most Corrupt

Every year CREW compiles a list of members of Congress who have been evaluated and found "corrupt" by CREW. Members that wind up on the list "have used their positions to financially benefit themselves, their friends and their families. Earmarks for large campaign contributors are commonplace and many members have traded legislative assistance for personal favors."

Some past members include John Sweeney (R-NY), Heather Wilson (R-NM), Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and William Jefferson (D-LA).[1]

2008 list

The year 2008 marks CREW’s fifth annual report on congressional corruption. It includes 15 members of Congress, much fewer members than 2008's report.

Eight of the 24 members from the list in 2008 are no longer in Congress and seven others were omitted either because no action was taken by any law enforcement agency, or the House or Senate ethics committees, or CREW discovered no additional information to add.

New to the 2009 list are Senators Roland Burris and John Ensign, and Representatives Nathan Deal, Jesse Jackson, Jr. and Pete Visclosky. Rep. Maxine Waters was off the list for two years, but has reappeared for new unethical activities, unrelated to what got her on prior lists.

At least 12 of the 15 on the 2008 list are under investigation: Vern Buchanan, Roland Burris, Ken Calvert, John Ensign, Jesse Jackson Jr., Jerry Lewis, Alan Mollohan, John Murtha, Charlie Rangel, Laura Richardson, Pete Visclosky and Don Young.

For 2008, the list hosts:

Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL)
Sen. Roland Burris (D-IL)
Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA)
Rep. Nathan Deal (R-GA)
Sen. John Ensign (R-NV)
Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL)
Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA)
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)
Rep. Alan B. Mollohan (D-WV)
Rep. John P. Murtha (D-PA)
Rep. Charles B. Rangel (D-NY)
Rep. Laura Richardson (D-CA)
Rep. Pete Visclosky (D-IN)
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA)
Rep. Don Young (R-AK)
