This measure was defeated

  • YES 4,508 (21.50%)

This was a non-binding question that asked county residents if they would like the county to consolidate unincorporated fire districts throughout the county area. The future consolidation idea was to incorporate the five areas into two districts which would be run by the cities of Marco Island and Naples. Local fire districts had been discussing the issue of consolidation and saw this vote as a gauge of voter's thoughts on the issue. Proponents stated that consolidation would make better use of taxpayer money whereas opponents said the consolidated fire districts would not be able to offer the same level of services to all areas.[2]
