Coates ran for election to the office of Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. The seat was open in 2014 because incumbent Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown (D) opted to run for governor rather than seek a third term in his current post.[1][2]

The general election takes place November 4, 2014. In Maryland, the governor and lieutenant governor are elected on the same ticket. Coates' gubernatorial running mate was state Del. Heather Mizeur.
