The purpose of the Michigan Department of Community Health is to manage the state's health policies and publicly-funded health service systems. The Department will serve roughly 2 million Michigan residents in 2011.
The Department had an appropriation of $13.1 billion in 2010.

The Department oversees the State's Medicaid program; mental health services; health needs assessment, health promotion, and disease prevention; and drug law enforcement, treatment, education, and prevention.
The State's Medicaid program provides coverage for roughly 10% of Michigan residents, or 1.3 million eligible persons, as of 2010. Medicaid comprised 90% of the Department of Community Health budget in 2010.
