Campaign themes

In a 2013 interview with the Courier Post, Carpenter stated the following when asked about his campaign priorities:[1]

How can the district meet its budget challenges?
Carpenter says the board should keep an open mind about the budget and use the input of the parents and employees in its decision-making process. “We should have a better transparency of how our funds are used,” he said. “Board members and administrators should be prepared to think outside the box.”

The district has a five-year emergency levy that raises about $7 million annually. If elected, will you support its renewal?
Carpenter says he doesn’t think districts can spend enough money on education for their kids. “When you do that, you are putting our money into the future,” he said. “I would listen to the public, but you need money to run school districts.”

What do you think are the biggest challenges facing the district in the next four years?
Carpenter says challenges include the budget, changing demographics and meeting state standards while still keeping the connection between parents and students. “Employees need open minds in regards to these changes. The demographics of our district are changing and we need to change too and look at things a little differently,” he said.

What was at stake?

Three seats were up for election on the Northwest Local School Board on November 5, 2013. All three incumbents filed for re-election.

Race Hamilton County (%) Ohio (%)
White 69.5 83.4
Black 25.9 12.5
Hispanic or Latino 2.7 3.3
Asian 2.2 1.8
American Indian 0.3 0.3

Note: The United States Census Bureau considers "Hispanic or Latino" to be a place of origin, not a race. Therefore, the Census allows citizens to report both their race and that they are from a "Hispanic or Latino" place of origin simultaneously. As a result, the percentages in each column of the racial demographics table will exceed 100 percent. Each column will add up to 100 percent after removing the "Hispanic or Latino" place of origin percentages, although rounding by the Census Bureau may make the total one or two tenths off from being exactly 100 percent.[5]
