A petition drive is underway to qualify a Durango Marijuana Decriminalization for the Durango, Colorado ballot in La Plata County.

Sensible Durango is the group heading the current petition drive to decriminalize marijuana in the city of Durango. They are aiming to get this issue on the November 2010 ballot in the city for residents to vote on. This is similar to measures passed in Denver in 2007 and Breckenridge in 2009. But like those, it is largely symbolic because it is still illegal in the state of Colorado to possess marijuana. The petition asks that those over the age of 21 would not be charged if in possession of 1 ounce or less of marijuana. The group believes that they will easily be able to obtain the 1,200 signatures needed to get the petition approved, they also believe this will further help a statewide measure to legalize marijuana. This is the first step they believe and hope the community is there to back them up in this belief.[1]
