Hightower and Alan Martinez (R) were the top two vote-getters in the December 6 special election. They faced fellow Republicans Thom Fitzpatrick, Tim Whetstone, and Marc Lattanzio. Libertarian candidate James Camp also ran. Hightower and Martinez received 41.8% and 21.3% of the vote, respectively. They proceeded to a runoff election on January 3, 2012 where Hightower defeated Martinez.
