McCrone ran for District 3 of the Montana Public Service Commission in 2012. He finished last in the Republican primary on June 5, 2012 and Roger Koopman came in first to win the party's nomination.

McCrone ran for election to the Montana Public Service Commission in 2004. He lost to Democrat Bob Raney, taking 46 percent of the vote.[3]
