An effort to recall Eleanor Torres, Henrietta Macias, and Ramon Rodriguez from their positions on the Rio School District Board of Directors in Ventura County, California was launched in April 2012. The recall effort stalled in May 2012 when insufficient signatures were included on initial paperwork, but the problem was corrected and the recall effort was renewed in June 2012.[1][2] The recall effort was abandoned in August 2012.[3]

Reasons for recall

Lynette Lucas, a teacher, was an organizer of the recall effort. Recall supporters accused the three recall targets of making secret deals, attempting to dismantle successful programs, and discriminating against those who disagreed with them. At the time of the recall, the school district was dealing with budget problems and searching for a superintendent. The recall targets had previously voted to terminate former Superintendent Sherianne Cotterell's contract without cause.[1]

Path to the ballot

Recall organizers filed a notice of intent along with the signatures of 10 voters. The county clerk said that the signatures were not sufficient. 10 valid signatures are required in order to initiate a formal recall effort.[1] Later in May, recall organizers again submitted signatures, and this time at least ten were found to be valid. Recall organizers had 120 days to collect 2,641 signatures. When recall organizers missed the August 10 deadline, the recall effort came to an end.[3]
