Following Fenton's service in the United States Army he attended Chicago State University, where he graduated in 1994. He went on to graduate from Harvard Law School in 1997. He currently practices law in Chicago, owning his own law firm.

Fenton ran in the 2013 special election for the U.S. House, representing Illinois' 2nd District. The election was held to replace Jesse Jackson, Jr. Fenton lost in the Democratic primary to Robin Kelly.
