Stanton earned his B.S. in social studies education from Florida International University in 1995. He went on to earn his master's degree in education from the University of Maryland, University College in 2004. He attended Hood College for additional master's credits in education administration.
Professionally, Stanton has worked as a high school teacher since 1997. He also served as the president of Sea Spray Gardens Inns Corp. from 1995 through 2000 and president of Montreal Inns Corp. from 1992 through 1997.
