The Georgia Commissioner of Natural Resources is a state executive position in the Georgia state government. The commissioner heads the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and carries out the policies of the Georgia Board of Natural Resources, which is responsible for regulating the exploitation of Georgia's natural resources and managing state parks and the state's historical places. The board appoints the commissioner subject to the approval of the governor.[1]

Current officeholder

The current commissioner is Mark Williams, who was appointed by the Board of Natural Resources on December 8, 2010, and confirmed by then-Governor Sonny Perdue (R) the next day.[2]

Williams is a director of Prime South Bank, past president of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Rotary Club. He is a former high school teacher and football coach and owns Harris Real Estate in Jesup. Williams also served in the Army National Guard. He holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Georgia College and State University.[3]

The commissioner of natural resources is directed to "supervise, direct, account for, organize, plan, administer, and execute the functions vested in the Department of Natural Resources..."[4] The department regulates the exploration and exploitation of Georgia's natural resources, as well as managing state parks and the state's historical places.
