Issues

Campaign themes

2014

Spikes' website highlighted the following campaign themes:

Education

The greatest asset of a community is the quality of its education. Every child, teenager, adult, and senior deserves the opportunity to access quality education or skills-based programs. I believe in an educational renaissance. Low family literacy and weak school-family relationships are a few of many challenges with which our school systems struggle. As Delegate, I will look at various educational models in cities, states, districts, and schools that could aid us in our quest to educate our State. I would also share what we offer in our State with other jurisdictions across the nation to help them meet their educational goals.

Housing
A quality community deserves quality housing. Vacant homes are not our community’s legacy; they are the possibility of a new tomorrow. One should not only have the tools to obtain affordable and beautiful housing, but also the tools to sustain home ownership through foreclosure prevention programs and services. Our seniors should not have to worry about losing their homes due to a loss of income or a fixed income. As Delegate, I will work to provide innovative services that will help new and current residents with housing challenges.

Health
A healthy community ensures the preservation of the 45th District. Programs, initiatives, and services serve no purpose without the health of our residents. I will work to ensure healthy communities through producing initiatives that promote health, such as cancer screenings, healthy eating, regular exercise, and regular checkups for individuals and families of all ages.

Jobs
Our community needs jobs that lead to careers that will enable our residents to support their families. We also need employers that provide their workers with access to affordable healthcare and fair benefits. As Delegate, I will encourage companies and organizations to do business in Baltimore, thus building and providing a network of job opportunities. I will also work to ensure job training and placement programs will meet the needs of those seeking employment.

Safety
Crime is a disease of our communities that has plagued us for too long. The cure is the community. I will work with the State legislature and our law enforcement leadership to develop ways to safely help our residents articulate their concerns without fear of retaliation from individuals who hurt our communities.[2][3]
