Hawaii Circuit Courts

Hawaii's Circuit Courts have general jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases, and the state's jury trials are held in these courts. The circuit courts also hold exclusive jurisdiction over the following types of cases:

  • civil cases where the amount in controversy is over $25,000
  • criminal felony cases
  • guardianship matters
  • mechanic's liens
  • misdemeanor violations transferred from district court
  • probate matters

In civil cases tried before a judge, not a jury, where the amount being contested ranges from $10,000 to $25,000, the circuit courts and district courts share jurisdiction.[1]
