The Idaho State Department of Education oversees K-12 public education in Idaho. It was founded in 1891, the first year of Idaho's statehood. The same year, the Idaho State Legislature created the Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction to supervise public education. In 1933, the Superintendent of Public Instruction was named as the executive secretary of the Idaho State Board of Education.[2] The department managed 755 schools and 287,329 during the 2012-2013 school year.[3]

The current Superintendent of Public Instruction is Tom Luna. The following list details his cabinet officials:[6]

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is composed of eight members, including the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The other seven members of the board are appointed by the Governor with the consent of the State Senate. The purpose of the board is to provide general oversight and governance for public K-20 education. The Board also serves as the Board of Trustees for state-sponsored public four year colleges and universities, and as the Board of Regents for the University of Idaho.[7]

The State Department of Education has two divisions managed by deputy superintendents listed below. The Educational Divisions are composed of eight subsequent divisions that are overseen by the Chief Deputy Superintendent:[6]
