SPRINGFIELD, Illinois: Due to the resignation of Jesse L. Jackson, Jr., the 2nd Congressional District in Illinois now must hold a special election to fill the vacant position. The Primary election will be held on February 26th with the special election then being held on April 9th. The February election date will be a special election date where money will be needed to fund the election, but the April election date is the State's Primary election so special money will not be needed for that election date. Setting the April election date will help reduce the overall cost of the election for the district. Several people have come out and stated their desire to run for the office, notably Robin Kelly, Toi Hutchinson, Anthony Beale, Mel Reynolds and Donne Trotter. Many are seeking the open seat as it is a rare opportunity to represent such a prominent district in the state. The seat has been historically a strong Democratic seat, Jackson held the office for 17 years before his resignation.[1]
