The Indiana Department of Education oversees K-12 public education in the state of Indiana. Article 8, section 8 of the Indiana Constitution created the Superintendent of Public Instruction to supervise public education.[2] The department managed 1,041,311 students and 1,989 schools during the 2012-2013 school year.[3]

Leadership

The current Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction is Glenda Ritz. The following list details her cabinet officials:[5]

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is comprised of 11 members, including the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The other ten members of the board are appointed by the Governor with the consent of the State Senate for four-year terms. Nine members represent each of the congressional districts and one member is an at-large representative. No more than six of the members may be from the same political party, and four of the members must be licensed educators currently employed in an Indiana school. The responsibilities of the board include Authorizing the distribution of state education funds to local schools; Adopting rules to implement various programs and requirements; determining a school's P.L. 221 performance and improvement category designation; accrediting public and nonpublic schools; and, implementing interventions to improve school performance.[6]
