The Indiana Auditor of State is an elected state executive position in the Indiana state government. The auditor serves as the chief financial officer of the government of Indiana.[1] The auditor serves a four-year term, and is responsible for maintaining all State accounts, which include obligations to other governing bodies and individuals, such as state employee compensation and tax money distribution.[2]

Current Officeholder

The current officeholder is Suzanne Crouch (R), a former state Rep. appointed by Governor Mike Pence effective January 2, 2014. She relieved interim officeholder Erin Sheridan, who had replaced Dwayne Sawyer (R), who abruptly resigned from office effective December 15, 2013, due to family reasons.[3][4][5][6]

Authority

Article 6, Section 1 of the Indiana Constitution addresses the office of state auditor:[7]

There shall be elected, by the voters of the state, a Secretary, an Auditor and a Treasurer of State, who shall, severally, hold their offices for four years. They shall perform such duties as may be enjoined by law; and no person shall be eligible to either of said offices, more than eight years in any period of twelve years.

The auditor is elected every four years during midterm elections (2010, 2014, 2018, etc.).[7] The auditor takes office on January 1 following the election.[2]

Duties

The state auditor is responsible for maintaining all State accounts, which include obligations to other governing bodies and individuals (state employee compensation, tax money distribution, etc.). They also report to the state legislature on odd numbered years a complete report of all things financial that relate to the auditor position of the previous two years.[2]

The salaries of executive officers in Indiana are determined by the Indiana State Legislature. In 2007, the Indiana Senate passed SB 401, which tied annual salary increases to increases received by state employees. State executive officials are not eligible for salary increases if state employees do not receive increases to their salaries.[9]

In 2014, the state auditor received a salary of $76,892, according to the Council of State Governments.[10]

In 2013, the state auditor received a salary of $74,581, according to the Council of State Governments.[11]

In 2012, the state auditor received a salary of $72,974, according to the Council of State Governments.
