James R. Apker was a 2016 Libertarian candidate for District 3 of the Washington State Senate. He ran unsuccessfully for District 7-Position 1 of the Washington House of Representatives in 2014.[1]

Campaign themes

2016

Apker's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Common Core and School Choice

Here are my ideas to remedy these issues;

  • Amend the constitution to allow so that charter schools can receive funds for your child’s education.
  • Make the money follow the child, K-12.
  • Stop the top down legislation of our children’s education and keep the choice of what to teach our children at the district level.
  • Have all funds designated for schools place in a separate locked account that can only be used for education K-12. This will ensure that we know all funds are going to our most precious resource, our children. (This would not include any funds for higher education or trade schools as they are not mandated as per the state constitution.)
  • Replace Common Core with a basic standardized test for reading, writing and arithmetic that simplifies instead of complicating. Prepare our children for life and not just college.

Economy, Jobs and Taxes

So how do we make the economy better in Spokane and through out Washington?

  • Make Washington more attractive to any and all types of business by reducing and eliminating useless taxes like the B&O tax which targets business that do high volumes of business/sales and go to a flat tax system were no loop hole can be exploited by companies like Microsoft and Boeing. Companies like this get special tax breaks that the rest of the state does not get.

2nd Amendment Rights

My solutions to this;

  • Follow the constitution. This is the foundation for our governments and laws.
  • Enforce any and all existing laws pertaining to gun control first and from most.
  • Review any new law, referendums, and initiatives that pertain to firearms and review for constitutionality before they are even placed on the ballet for review.

Term Limits

My Solutions for career politicians;

  • Limit the number of terms to three (3) for State Senate and six (6) for State Legislators for a total of 12 years of service. If a politician want to continue to serve they must run for another position.
  • Reform campaign finance to limit total funds raised and spent to 30,000 for any position. This will keep the special interest limited in how much they can spend on any one candidate.[2]
