James B. Lewis is the former New Mexico Treasurer. Lewis, a Democrat, was first elected in 2006 and was re-elected in 2010. He was ineligible for re-election in 2014 due to term limits.[1]


Lewis was born in Roswell, New Mexico. He served in the U.S. Army as a military police officer from 1970-1972 before earning a B.S. in education from Bishop College.[1]

Political career

New Mexico Treasurer (2006 - 2014)

In his campaign for treasurer, Lewis pledged to restore integrity to the office of treasurer. Since 2006, he has:

  • evaluated every position in the agency and reorganized the office to enhance proficiency, efficiency, effectiveness and productivity;
  • enhanced communication, collaboration, and cooperation both internally and externally;
  • provided education and training for staff;
  • established a labor/management committee to address staff concerns;
  • empanelled a Blue Ribbon Commission for an independent assessment;
  • brought state accounts and selfearning accounts reconciliation up to date;
  • signed the first Joint Powers Agreement enabling Ramah Navajo Chapter to invest in the LGIP; and
  • enhanced the public's knowledge of the Treasury through public speeches, editorial boards, city, county, and state presentations, television and radio appearances, and national boards presentations.[2]

Lewis was ineligible to run for re-election as New Mexico Treasurer in 2014 due to term limits.


Lewis won re-election as state treasurer in the November 2010 election, defeating Republican Jim D. Schoonover.[3]
