James Lewis (b. December 26, 1930) was a Democratic member of the Indiana State Senate, representing District 45. He served as Assistant Minority Caucus Leader.

Lewis was a Charleston City Councilman from 1959 to 1968. He served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1970 to 1972. He was also a Clark County Councilman from 1980 to 1982. He served in the Indiana State Senate from 1974 to 1978 and again from 1986 to the present.

Lewis is a retired Building Contractor for the Lewis Construction Company.

Lewis attended Purdue University.

Lewis lost to Republican candidate Jim Smith by a margin of 22,299 to 20,494 in the November 2 general election.[1]

In the May 4 primary election, Lewis ran unopposed.[2]


On November 7, 2006, Democrat James Lewis won re-election to the Indiana State Senate District 45 receiving 24,597 votes, ahead of Republican Floyd Coates receiving 16,886 votes.[3]
