John Buckley was a Libertarian candidate for West Virginia secretary of state in the 2016 election. He was defeated in the general election on November 8, 2016.

Buckley was also a 2014 Libertarian candidate seeking election to the U.S. Senate from West Virginia.[1] He lost the general election on November 4, 2014.

Buckley practiced law and recently retired from a career at the United States Court of Federal Claims, where he served as the chief of staff and senior law clerk to the chief judge of the court and as acting clerk of the court. He was national chairman of Young Americans for Freedom, a conservative youth organization founded in 1960 at the home of author and columnist William F. Buckley, Jr. He has also worked for the American Conservative Union, the National Tax Limitation Committee, the Cato Institute, the Institute for Humane Studies and the Law and Economics Center of George Mason University School of Law.[2]

Buckley filed to run as a Libertarian candidate in the 2016 election for West Virginia secretary of state. He will compete in November with incumbent Natalie Tennant (D) and Mac Warner (R), who won their parties' nominations in the May 10 primary elections.[3]
