John Daniel Couriel was a 2012 Republican candidate for District 35 of the Florida State Senate.[1] District 35 runs along the coast of Miami-Dade County from Golden Beach to Homestead. It includes portions of Miami, Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, Coral Gables, Pinecrest, Coconut Grove, South Miami, Miami Shores, Aventura, Sunny Isles, and other south Florida neighborhoods.[2]

Couriel was born March 23, 1978, in Miami, Florida.[2]

In 2003 and 2004, Couriel clerked for the Honorable John D. Bates of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.[2] For five years, he practiced at Davis Polk & Wardwell, where he worked on transactional and litigation matters, especially in Europe and Latin America.[2] In 2009, Couriel accepted a position as an Assistant United States Attorney.[2]

Couriel ran in the 2012 election for Florida State Senate District 35. Couriel ran unopposed in the Republican primary on August 14, 2012, and was defeated by incumbent Gwen Margolis (D) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[1]

Personal

Couriel is married to Rebecca L. Toonkel, M.D., a pulmonologist. They have one son, Jonas Aaron, born in March 2011, and one daughter, Eden Sofia, born in July 2012.[2]
