Johnson is a commercial pilot, flight instructor and businessman. He served in the U.S. Army's 14th Armored Cavalry. He is currently an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Air Station Houston and the US Air Force Auxiliary.
Johnson ran in the 2014 election for the U.S. House to represent Texas' 9th District. Johnson won the Libertarian Party nomination at the state convention in April 2014. He was defeated by incumbent Al Green (D) in the general election on November 4, 2014.
