Judge temporarily blocks new Alabama immigration law
Judge Sharon Lovelace blocked the law until September 29 to allow the court more time to consider the lawsuits that have been filed against it.
"I look forward to the Judge ruling on the merits. We have long needed a tough law against illegal immigration in this state, and we now have one. I will continue to fight at every turn to defend this law against any and all challenges," said Governor Robert Bentley (R).
The law that was passed by the legislature and signed by Governor Robert Bentley (R) earlier this year would allow state police to detain any individual suspected of being an illegal alien during any police interaction such as a traffic violation. The new law also makes it a crime for anyone to knowingly transport or harbor an illegal alien. Public schools would also be required to verify the immigration status of students.
