After teaching in Michigan for 5 years, Potter moved to Fort Wayne to take a position teaching at Homestead High School. Potter has been teaching for the past 30 years. Currently, he is serving his second four-year term on the Aboite Township Board.
Potter ran in the 2012 election for Indiana House of Representatives District 83. Potter was defeated by incumbent Kathy Heuer in the Republican primary on May 8, 2012. John Good ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.
