Elections for the New Mexico House of Representatives took place in 2014. A primary election took place on June 3, 2014, and a general election took place on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was February 4, 2014. Incumbent Kelly K. Fajardo was unopposed in the Republican primary, while Teresa K.E. Smith De Cherif defeated Andrew Barreras in the Democratic primary. Fajardo defeated Smith De Cherif in the general election.[6][7]

The New Mexico House of Representatives was a battleground chamber that Ballotpedia identified as having the opportunity to switch partisan control in 2014. The New Mexico House had a difference in partisan balance between Democrats and Republican of four seats, which amounted to 5.7 percent of the chamber. District 7 in the House was identified by Ballotpedia, the Santa Fe New Mexican and the New Mexico Telegram as a battleground district that would be key in determining control of the New Mexico House of Representatives. Incumbent Kelly K. Fajardo (R) was targeted by Democrats because she skipped a vote last legislative session to raise the state's minimum-wage. In the general election, Fajardo defeated Teresa K.E. Smith De Cherif (D). Smith De Cherif defeated Andrew Barreras in the Democratic primary. Fajardo narrowly defeated Barreras in 2012.[8][9]

2016

Fajardo's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Public Safety

I have worked with constant resolve on domestic violence bills to protect family members from the cycle of abuse. I continue to be the voice of those victims who need justice to prevail with stiffer penalties so no one else will suffer the devastation of preventable family violence. I have introduced intervention legislation in the existing governmental systems that assist our families and children. I am continuing to see Public Safety as my primary responsibility as a public official.

Ethics

I believe it is a sacred trust to hold office as your legislator. I will fight against those who would break that trust by insuring notice of public governmental meetings 72 hours before the event so that more citizens of New Mexico can participate in their government. I will advocate on your behalf for public corruption laws to push for harder penalties for those elected officials that would break their oaths for personal gain, engaging in corruption, so they can be prosecuted and receive criminal penalties including jail sentences. I will do all I can to maintain the trust you have placed in me as your elected representative.

Jobs

Whether it is big industry on the mesa or the Mom and Pop shops of the valley, we don’t have to lose our identity to bring work into Valencia County. Our history is one of hard working people who pulled together to create a legacy we can be proud of. We owe it to our children as we move into the future to give them opportunities here, at home, to continue that heritage, and bring it full circle by passing on our identity as a people who maintained the spirit of Solomon Luna’s Valencia County as a place where people were welcomed to come and work beside us.

Government Efficiency

Being your representative is the most important role I play in the House of Representatives. Valencia County is my home. When I leave Santa Fe at the end of a legislative session, I come back to District 7 and the friends that support me to do the work for the State of New Mexico. I know how important governmental efficiency is to those who I represent. I am accountable to you. I am honored to serve you and pledge to do all I can to be as effectual as possible in dealing with the resources of the House of the People of New Mexico.

Taxes

While taxes are the provisional finances of government operations and community infrastructure, they should not be holding us back. We need economic growth to continue to keep our small businesses in business, to give our kids a reason to stay continuing our heritage, and to compete with other states to bring industry here. New Mexico’s tax code is overly-complicated and particularly burdensome to small businesses. I am committed to reforming the tax code to make sure our homegrown businesses can compete in the global economy. Wise use of tax dollars will enable our economy to grow to keep our kids here and bring industry into our community.[13]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in New Mexico

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
