TOPEKA, Kansas: On August 5, voters settled the Republican primaries for governor/lieutenant governor, secretary of state and insurance commissioner, the only three contested fields between the six Kansas state executive offices up for election in 2014. The remaining nine major party primaries drew one candidate apiece, producing a complete set of unopposed Democratic nominees. Each hope to inject a bit of blue back into the fully red ensemble of executives serving currently.[1]

On primary election night, incumbent Governor Sam Brownback and Secretary of State Kris Kobach were re-nominated for their respective seats, scoring double-digit wins against single challengers, both virtual unknowns. Brownback, alongside 2010 running mate and current Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer, will face a formidable Democratic ticket led by Paul Davis in the general election. Coming off months of trading barbs with primary opponent Scott Morgan, Kobach can expect tensions to escalate further before his final showdown with Democratic nominee Jean Schodorf this fall.

Rounding out the night, accountant and Republican Leawood executive Ken Selzer secured a slot on the November ballot for the open-seat race to succeed Sandy Praeger (R) as Kansas Commissioner of Insurance.[2] With 27 percent of the vote, Selzer edged out four other contenders in the hotly contested primary that was not called until around midnight after the polls closed. The second and third highest vote-getters, Beverly Gossage and Clark Shultz, each received 23 percent, making Selzer's victory appear more as a function of the field's over-saturation with indistinct candidates.

All five candidates who sought the GOP nomination for insurance commissioner focused on their opposition to Obamacare during their primary campaigns. Praeger famously broke with other party leaders as an advocate for the federal health care overhaul and has indicated her decision to retire upon after three terms was partly motivated by doubt that she had enough GOP support left to win another primary. Praeger is the only Kansas state executive incumbent not seeking re-election in 2014. The commissioner serves as head of the Kansas Department of Insurance, which regulates and reviews companies for financial solvency and regulatory compliance, educates consumers and helps license agents selling insurance products in the state.[3] [4] Selzer will face uncontested Democrat Dennis Anderson, an Overland Park businessman, for the chance to replace Praeger in the office.[5][6]

A total of six state executive positions are up for election in 2014 in the state of Kansas: governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state treasurer and insurance commissioner. Candidates for governor and lieutenant governor run together on a single ticket.

Five of the six incumbents are seeking re-election. Besides Brownback, Colyer and Kobach, that includes Attorney General Derek Schmidt (R) and Treasurer Ron Estes (R), neither of whom faced a primary challenge.[7][8][9][10]

Below, Ballotpedia has put together a review of the three primary contests as well as a look ahead at the November 4 ballot.
