Kirk Caldwell signature challenge (2008)
The Kirk Caldwell signature challenge was a successful effort to strike the name of Kirk Caldwell, currently a Democratic member of the Hawaii House of Representatives (District 24), representing Manoa, Manoa Valley and University, from a spot on the November 4, 2008 ballot for a City Council seat.
After Caldwell submitted his petition, and after the official deadline had passed, he was allowed to add a voter's signature to meet the minimum number required.
Caldwell submitted his papers at the City Clerk's office one minute before the deadline, but was short a valid signature. A worker for the office who lives in the correct Council district then added her signature. According to the state elections office, candidates aren't allowed to add more signatures once nomination papers are filed.
