Campaign themes

2016

Serrano's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Environment

Krystal supports:

  • Substantial funding for a vigorous land preservation program.
  • Protecting our precious water resources.
  • Restrict the use of toxic chemicals on roads for the removal of snow and ice.
  • Laws and policies that require energy from sustainable, non-carbon emitting sources.
  • Major funding to subsidize solar projects.

Taxes

Krystal supports:

  • Preservation of the STAR property tax exemption.
  • Repeal of MTA payroll tax.
  • Ideally, transforming school funding from property tax base to general funds.
  • Property taxes based on income.

Ethics

Krystal supports:

  • Strong ethics reform.
  • Mandate of disclosure of outside income.
  • Cancel the pensions of convicted state officials.

  • Incentives/programs for all small businesses.
  • Special set-asides for local, women and minority owned businesses.

  • Education and engagement of the public.
  • Training for new and returning farmers.
  • Existing farmland protection and the right of farmers to farm.
  • Exemption of agricultural activities from MTA taxes.

2014

Serrano's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[3]

Economic Justice

  • Excerpt: "The heart of the problem is a regressive property tax system that disproportionately affects middle-income families, the unemployed, and the elderly. We need to replace that system with a progressive income tax, based on ability to pay. At the same time, we must strengthen the rungs of opportunity into the middle class by reducing ever-increasing tuition in the SUNY system, and creating a livable minimum wage that promises hope, not poverty."

Women’s Equality

  • Excerpt: "Last year, the New York State Legislature failed to pass a ten-point plan to empower women across New York State by combating employment discrimination, strengthening laws against workplace sexual harassment, and guaranteeing women’s reproductive rights. In Albany, I will push aggressively for this very important legislation."

Ethics Reform

  • Excerpt: "We need to restrict the power of wealth in Albany, and restore a strong voice to ordinary citizens by public financing of state elections. This way, our elected officials will be accountable to voters, not donors."

Protecting our Environment

  • Excerpt: "My position on hydro-fracking is that until companies which wish to hydro-frack disclose the full range of chemicals which hydro-fracking requires, I will stand against a practice that endangers our aquifers, rivers, air and health. These precious resources are too great to risk."
  • Excerpt: "In Albany, I will push for investment in clean energy, such as wind and solar, and to vigorously preserve our forests and state parks."
