Lane County Property Tax Levy (May 2010)
This measure was defeated
- YES 38,251 (45.75%)
- NO 45,349 (54.25%)
This measure sought to add an additional $10 per year to the taxes paid currently by property owners in the county. The money generated from this increase property would have gone towards funding the Oregon State University’s Lane county Extension Services. This organization provides educational programs for county residents and many saw it as an important aspect of the community. A strong "Yes" vote drive was underway. A group against this measure, called Friends4BetterSolutions noted that the tax was excessive and unnecessary in hard economic times. The leader of the group noted that instead of asking residents to pay into this programs, those that participate should be charged a user fee which would help cover the budget shortfalls.
The head of the extension service said that the program will close this summer since this measure was not approved. Extension services in other counties in the state have also suffered in the economic times, Lane county officials were hoping jobs and volunteers would be saved with the passing of this measure. The service already receives free rent from the county.
