Obtaining ballot access for its state and federal candidates has by necessity been a consuming preoccupation and concern of the Libertarian Party since it first fielded a presidential candidate in 1972. John Hospers was the first Libertarian presidential candidate, and Toni Nathan was his running mate.

In 1972, Nathan was the first woman ever to receive an Electoral College vote. It was cast by Virginia Elector Roger McBride.
